Cape Tango

Tango has its roots in Africa. From Africa to Buenos Aires, Europe then back to Africa. Africa is in its Soul and we seek to remind Africa of this connection.

The Cape Tango Festival

The Cape Tango Festival (CTF) is Cape Tango’s primary yearly event and The tango event of the year in South Africa. It is about bringing communities together from all levels – Local, National, Continental as well as International. This year’s theme is “Connecting Africa”.

CTTM 2018

CTTM 2018 V&A Waterfront

Building on the legacy of CTTM 2017, CTTM 2018 was conceptualized around “Community and Inclusivity”. We started to run this event more along the lines of a festival, as we had a number of teachers who did both workshops as well as performances.
Virginia Piria Hüge and José Luis Pereira Figueroa from Uruguay conducted a workshop on the Chacarera on the opening evening, proving to be the perfect ice-breaker. In addition they treated attendees with 3 great performance dances of Tango, Milonga and Chacarera.

Our other invited teachers were Mario de Camillis from Argentina and, due to popular demand, once again Sidney Grant from the USA. In addition to hosted workshops, they regaled us with a joint performance on the Saturday evening.

In addition, our local teachers got involved with Cherona Margaretha and Nur Dreyer performing a Tango and Milonga on Sunday evening.

Inaugural CTTM 2017

CTTM 2017 with Sidney Grant

Our first Cape Town Tango Marathon (CTTM) – and in fact the first Tango Marathon in Southern Africa – was held. It proved to be a great success with local, continental and international participation. We were lucky to have Sidney Grant join us from the United States of America as a guest teacher and attendee. He brought international awareness, energy and flair to the event through warm-up classes before milongas plus workshops before and after the Marathon, which were well attended and enjoyed.

We were also fortunate to have the Cape Town Tango Ensemble (CTTE) providing live music.
